RIDING PROGRAM (continued)

If you are in a hurry-up mode with your riding;  our School program is not for you.

All students who come to Stanhope Stables will be evaluated on the lunge-line. All beginner riders stay on the lunge-line until they have a correct and secure seat. If the child is of a very young age, he/she will be on the lunge-line until the instructor feels he/she can listen and take direction. We believe in the importance of teaching at the highest standard of basics for both horse and rider.

School Horses

Neither fast nor rushing, but not so slow that you need your crop more than your leg. Sensitive to the aids, but kind and forgiving to the mistakes of a new rider.

One of the most important instruments for a beginner rider is a good school horse.

I would say that most people think when they come to ride that the school horse they are riding is an animal that no one else would want. This is so far from the truth. It will take months to find one good school horse. I have found that it has become a never-ending search with a lot of trials and very few finds.

I will probably ride twenty to thirty horses before I find one Stanhope Stable School Horse. As far as I am concerned, I feel that they are an endangered species. Our school horses are treated as you would a private horse; they are on a complete maintenance program. They are not allowed to go for more than 2 hours a day and we do not book lessons back to back. An In-house trainer schools all our horses once a week. To quote the famous instructor George Morris, ÏIf you are ready to jump courses, you are ready to own your own horse.Ó At Stanhope Stables, our first priority is for you to learn the basics of horsemanship and to have a safe lesson. All riders are required to wear approved safety helmets with Paddock boots or Riding boots.
